Unleashing the Past:
Allow me to take you back to a time when I was clueless
about my career path and aspirations. With a background in MBA Finance, I
received an interview invitation from a Fin-Tech company called Broadridge,
thanks to my profile on Naukri. The recruiter informed me to come prepared,
even providing a set of questions to anticipate. However, in my laziness, I
skimmed through the company's details and proceeded to the interview.
A Costly Oversight:
During the interview, I stumbled at the first hurdle. When
asked about the company's nature of business, I couldn't provide a satisfactory
answer because I hadn't familiarized myself with their services, target
audience, or reasons for wanting to work in that specific field. Moreover, when
faced with a process-related question I was told to prepare for, my response of
"I will learn everything on the job" revealed my lack of skills and
preparation.
Insights and Lessons Learned: Reflecting on this experience,
several crucial insights emerged:
Insight No. 1: Research and Decide in Advance: Prioritize
understanding the company, their services, and why you are drawn to working in
a particular department or role. This informed decision-making is vital when
considering job opportunities.
Insight No. 2: Honesty and Self-Assessment: While learning
on the job is expected, it's crucial to showcase existing skill sets and how
they align with the role. Being honest about your suitability for the position
can save time and prevent mismatched expectations.
Insight No. 3: Core Knowledge Matters: Even if I had managed
to memorize the answers, I would have eventually realized my lack of core
knowledge for the role. It's essential to possess a foundational understanding
to thrive in a job and avoid early disappointments.
Insight No. 4: Respect for Others' Time: Unpreparedness not
only wastes your own time but also the valuable resources and efforts of
recruiters, companies, and even your loved ones who support you throughout the
process.
Key Takeaways for My Reader Pals: To ensure a smoother
interview experience and set yourself up for success, consider the following
steps:
Assess Fit and Understand the Job: Before attending an
interview, carefully evaluate whether your skills align with the job
requirements. Read the job description thoroughly and put your ego aside when
making a decision.
Research and Gain Clarity: Take the time to understand the
role, its expectations, the required time commitment, and potential growth
opportunities within the company. Platforms like Quora, Glassdoor, and even
conversing with AI assistants like ChatGPT can provide valuable insights.
Get to Know the Company: Explore the company's website and
platforms like Glassdoor to gather information about their services, size, and
work culture. This knowledge will empower you to ask insightful questions and
showcase your genuine interest.
Conclusion: I hope this article serves as a helpful guide to
my Reader Pals. Feedback, comments, and discussions are always welcome.
