The Crucial Misstep: Unveiling my First Professional Blunder

Unleashing the Past:

Allow me to take you back to a time when I was clueless about my career path and aspirations. With a background in MBA Finance, I received an interview invitation from a Fin-Tech company called Broadridge, thanks to my profile on Naukri. The recruiter informed me to come prepared, even providing a set of questions to anticipate. However, in my laziness, I skimmed through the company's details and proceeded to the interview.

A Costly Oversight:

During the interview, I stumbled at the first hurdle. When asked about the company's nature of business, I couldn't provide a satisfactory answer because I hadn't familiarized myself with their services, target audience, or reasons for wanting to work in that specific field. Moreover, when faced with a process-related question I was told to prepare for, my response of "I will learn everything on the job" revealed my lack of skills and preparation.

Insights and Lessons Learned: Reflecting on this experience, several crucial insights emerged:

Insight No. 1: Research and Decide in Advance: Prioritize understanding the company, their services, and why you are drawn to working in a particular department or role. This informed decision-making is vital when considering job opportunities.

Insight No. 2: Honesty and Self-Assessment: While learning on the job is expected, it's crucial to showcase existing skill sets and how they align with the role. Being honest about your suitability for the position can save time and prevent mismatched expectations.

Insight No. 3: Core Knowledge Matters: Even if I had managed to memorize the answers, I would have eventually realized my lack of core knowledge for the role. It's essential to possess a foundational understanding to thrive in a job and avoid early disappointments.

Insight No. 4: Respect for Others' Time: Unpreparedness not only wastes your own time but also the valuable resources and efforts of recruiters, companies, and even your loved ones who support you throughout the process.

Key Takeaways for My Reader Pals: To ensure a smoother interview experience and set yourself up for success, consider the following steps:

Assess Fit and Understand the Job: Before attending an interview, carefully evaluate whether your skills align with the job requirements. Read the job description thoroughly and put your ego aside when making a decision.

Research and Gain Clarity: Take the time to understand the role, its expectations, the required time commitment, and potential growth opportunities within the company. Platforms like Quora, Glassdoor, and even conversing with AI assistants like ChatGPT can provide valuable insights.

Get to Know the Company: Explore the company's website and platforms like Glassdoor to gather information about their services, size, and work culture. This knowledge will empower you to ask insightful questions and showcase your genuine interest.

Conclusion: I hope this article serves as a helpful guide to my Reader Pals. Feedback, comments, and discussions are always welcome.

From Couch Potato to Customer Service Pro: Unveiling what helped me Land My First Job

In my previous article, I shared the story of how I completely bombed my first interview. Now, let's shift gears and talk about the interview that led to my first job. Most people who know me are aware that I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I was oblivious to my strengths, goals, and even how to survive in this crazy world. That's when an aunt of mine entered my life like a goddess and suggested that I interview with HSBC Bank for a customer service position. Now, for a customer service job, there are primarily two requirements: 1.        Fluency in English (most customer service jobs demand this). 2.        Willingness to communicate extensively. Although I was hesitant about the latter, I realized beggars can't be choosers, so decided to give it a shot. During the interview, there were several other candidates present, and we were all seated in a training room of sorts. One of the interviewers...

Reflecting on the Monumental Mistake of my Career

It's been a while since my last blog post. As I sit in my calm office – my second home – I realize my blog is more than just words. It's a peek into my work journey, something that might resonate with some of you. Today, I break the silence, hoping to keep this flow going. In my last post, I shared proudly how I became a top performer at HSBC. But truth be told, it wasn't all easy. There were mistakes that slowed me down. Writing this is hard and maybe that is why it took me so long to publish this blogpost. When I started at HSBC, I followed all the rules, especially the dress code. It was mandatory and it was my first job. I wanted to make a good impression. But soon after I joined there was a dress code policy change, they made it Semi-Formal. I took it too far. I went from semi-formal straight to too casual, and it affected my work attitude, it affected how people looked at me. My shifts started at 7:30 each morning. And at that phase of my life, I lacked ...

From Novice to Best Performer: Unveiling the Secrets of My First Job

In my previous blog posts, I shared my experiences of a failed interview and a successful interview. Now, let's dive into the story of my first job. Joining HSBC bank as a Customer Service Executive, I embarked on a journey as part of the Singapore process in Payments Investigations. My role involved investigating stuck payments and finding solutions to clear them. Today, I'll reveal how I became one of the top contributors in my team during my 1.5-year tenure at the organization. Challenges I Faced: Feeling Out of Place: Initially, joining a new team made me uncomfortable as I felt disconnected. I went through weeks of having no one to eat lunch with until I made an effort to mingle with my colleagues. Self-Responsibility: I realized that no one else was accountable for my training, sense of belonging, or getting me started with work. While there was an induction process, the onus was primarily on me to take charge. Adapting to Organizational Culture: Every organi...
